miss sonya inspired me today.
i have been having truly epic difficulty with a certain two year old i know...she cant speak so we kinda cut her slack when she's all whiney... and guess where that got us? she bites. she hits. she runs away when i say "come here", she stands when i say sit, she throws food instead of eating it, or feeds the dog (it was sooo cute at first. now it pisses me off.) i am utterly out of control of this child. so i spent a good while contemplating, how the HELL does parenting work? what am i supposed to do? why did no one tell me this, like say at the hospital the day i had her, that my weak, sweet little baby would turn into this "im gunna laugh when you yell at me", willfully defiant, sassy molassy miss diva diapers? she doesnt listen to me. she just doesnt. no one seems to know exactly how to handle these violent creatures we call toddlers... but i'm workin' on it. i purchased a variety of "Toddler Tool" books, with titles that include "No Hitting, Teeth are not for biting, Sharing Time," etc etc for the mom on her last nerve.
one minute shes kissing me and sharing with her brother without being asked, helping set the table, and bein' all cute... next minute shes screaming and biting my arm and crapping on my inlaws white living room carpet. *ok, so that incident was sheer accident and i could tell she felt bad, but seriously...biggest dump i've ever seen...on my inlaws carpet..yuppp.*
i am begining to think that parenting is a trial by error thing. if this method didnt work, then move on to the next. despite what television tells us, i like to believe that MOST of the general population does not end up being a criminal, stripper, hooker, or murderer, thats like a select few... and i know A LOT of dumb parents. so i'm thinking theres hope. like so what if your two, almost three year old decides that shes too cool to listen to you? shes two. almost three. you can make her listen when she's...five. you know? like, we got time to figure this shit out. we have time to make lots and lots of mistakes, and FIX them. but at the end of the day, as long as we show our kids that we love them, and we arent gunna let them get away with murder... then so what if they wear their spaghetti? so what if they use their sippy cup as an indoor sprinkler? if they help you clean up all that water, its all good, right?
trial and error my loves.. trial and error.
stay strong dear mommies of the terrible two and threes!

Oh lord I'm so right there with you. My daughter is 2 and driving my batty and up the highest wall.
ReplyDeleteShe has so much attitude and sass I just wanna pop it out of her.
But we show her love and say thank you when she does things right. and tell her she's a good girl when she is good.
I'm hoping my sweet little baby is still in there somewhere.
I'm hanging on to hope.
arent we all!!! i try that whole positive reinforcement thing too. oof. childrens.
ReplyDelete*hailyn*: pssh, got it from my mama. ;)
ReplyDeletestick to your guns. no means no. timeouts work AMAZING. i've never hit melina (she gets a slap on the hand if it's super dangerous, like the time she tried to take the pot off the stove), but otherwise, being firm. she SCREAMS thru her 2 minutes on time out- one minute for every year- but it works. and she gets them in public too! i'm not afraid to have control over her, but sergey won't punish her for anything!!
